Start the test, then use a physical keyboard. Esc or Tab leaves the test area. Clicking the diagram does not test a key.

On a small screen, scroll the keyboard sideways. Connect an external keyboard to test from a phone or tablet.

Presses: 0

Repeats: 0

Releases observed: 0

Interrupted holds: 0

Unmapped events: 0

Suppressed orphan repeats: 0

Repeated keydown events do not count as new presses. An interrupted hold means capture paused before its release was seen; it is not a stuck-key finding.

How to use the Computer Keyboard Test

This free Computer Keyboard Test shows which physical-key events reach your browser. Start with individual keys, then try a combination.

  1. Choose a reference diagram and select Start test.
  2. Press and release each physical key. Observed keys stay marked.
  3. Try a combination, pause, and copy or download a summary if useful.

Keycaps in the diagram are a display. Clicking them cannot check your keyboard. Read the step-by-step manual.

Understand your keyboard test results

A marked key means the browser received a keydown event with that code. Held now shows keys whose releases have not yet been observed while capture stays active. Not yet observed means only that: it does not prove a key is broken.

The diagrams are ANSI references, not an inventory of your device. Other codes appear under View details. Mac key names change the reference labels, not your keyboard settings. See what each count means.

Test multiple keys and keyboard rollover

Hold left Shift, then press A. If both events reach this page, Held now becomes 2. Release them and the count returns to 0. Maximum held together keeps the largest combination this page observed.

This is a useful key rollover observation, not certification of advertised N-key rollover or proof that ghosting cannot occur. Compare the worked examples.

What an online keyboard test can detect

The test observes physical-position codes, presses, repeats and releases delivered to this page. Firmware, your operating system, shortcuts and input methods can intercept keys. Fn and media behavior varies; a missing event is not a diagnosis. A key's physical code can also differ from the character produced by your language layout.

Focus leaving the test pauses capture and clears held states. Ordinary auto-repeat is counted separately from new presses. This test does not measure latency, polling rate, typing speed or switch health, and it does not repair or remap keys. Read the browser limits and troubleshooting steps.

Why isn't a key showing up?

  1. Check that the test says Listening. If it is paused, select Start test or Resume test, then release and press the key again.
  2. Open View details and check Outside this diagram. A key can be observed without belonging to the selected reference.
  3. For the numeric keypad, consider Num Lock. Fn layers, media controls and system shortcuts may not reach a webpage.
  4. Compare the key in another application, browser or device before deciding whether there is a hardware problem.

Tab moves focus away and pauses capture. Releasing Esc also pauses the test; select Resume test to continue. A missing event or interrupted hold alone does not prove a broken or stuck key.

Test Windows, Mac and laptop keyboards

Choose Windows or Mac key names to make the reference labels easier to read. On Mac, Command uses Meta codes and Option uses Alt codes. The choice changes labels; it does not detect your keyboard model, remap keys or change the active language layout.

For a laptop or compact keyboard, choose the closest reference and check any extra codes in View details. Fn-layer behavior depends on the keyboard and operating system. On a phone or tablet, connect a physical external keyboard; tapping the screen keyboard or the diagram does not establish that a physical switch works. Read about reference layouts and key names.

Keyboard test privacy and downloadable reports

The test keeps aggregate observations in memory. Reloading or closing the page can lose them. Copy report keeps Markdown; Download report offers Markdown, JSON and plain text. Keeping a report first pauses capture for a consistent snapshot. No typed passage or chronological keystroke log is collected.

Your System, Light or Dark appearance preference is stored separately from test results by this site. Learn what reports contain or read the privacy policy.
